Golden Retriever gives birth to 16 puppies

ROWLEY, Mass. -- A local woman's pregnant dog had a double digit delivery.

Indya Sheehan's two-year-old Golden Retriever Retro gave birth to 16 puppies at Slade Veterinary Hospital.

A normal litter only has six to 10 puppies.

Retro gave birth to the puppies a few weeks early by c-section.

When the doctors came out to announce how many puppies Sheehan would be going home with, she was surprised.

"I think I was in shock," Sheehan said.

For now, all 16 puppies are living at Sheehan's Rowley home. She and Retro are alternating with the feeding process; Sheehan lends a hand by feeding the puppies with a bottle.

With the arrival of 16 puppies, Sheehan said it's a 24-hour job to take care of them.

"I haven't had time to think of 16 names," she said.

Sheehan isn't sure if she will have Retro breed again after this giant delivery.

Four of the puppies have already been adopted.
