Mass. JCC sold as Jewish community disperses
STOUGHTON, Mass. -- The Striar Jewish Community Center in Stoughton is being sold to the Old Colony YMCA in a move JCC officials attribute to a Jewish population that is becoming more dispersed across the South Shore.
JCC officials said on Monday that the YMCA will take over the 82,000-square-foot facility as well as Striar's fitness, aquatics and family services on March 1.
Striar's preschool and after-school programs will remain at the site until June, when they'll be moved to new quarters on the South Shore.
Striar opened in 1988 to replace three older Jewish centers in Quincy and Brockton. It served about 9,500 people and employed 100.
JCC officials say they sold the facility to the YMCA because of the Y's commitment to human services.
