Odor problems continue to plague Lowell Registry of Motor Vehicles

LOWELL, Mass. -- The Registry of Motor Vehicles was evacuated after people started complaining about a strange odor.

No individuals were transported to any hospitals. However, two people were treated on the scene for breathing issues after the problems began around 10 a.m.

Officials said the odor may even come from a carbon monoxide leak.

"We're in the process of metering the building, checking the ventilation systems and making sure we don't have high levels of carbon monoxide," said Captain Phil Charron, of the Lowell Fire Department.

7News has been told the odor was coming from an adjoining building and that similar incidents have occurred in the past.

"This is something that has been an ongoing problem up here for awhile," said State Representative David Nangle (D-Middlesex County). "As one of the state representatives up here in the area, I've had about enough of it. The public safety of the employees should be coming first [and] the general public that is going into the building.
