Construction site, sulfur making Fenway area smell
BOSTON (WHDH) -- People who live and work near Fenway Park say the area literally stinks. According to the owner of the project, the smell has been coming from a construction site near the park.
As crews excavate, they're hitting pockets of decaying organic material that contain sulfur, which in turn releases the odor.
The smell can last for a few hours after a pocket is hit -- but there is no health risk.
“Sometimes you want a Tasty Burger but that smell just makes you want to throw up,” one woman said.
With Opening Day on Monday, will the Fenway stink have any effect on the Sox?
“I don’t think it’s going to affect Opening Day if they still have those beer prices the same as what they do,” said one man. “Egg smell or not, it’s going to smell like hot dogs in there.”
Crews are trying to fix the problem by using an odor-reducing spray in the area.
