As businesses reopen, more heroes emerge
BOSTON (WHDH) -- It may never be business as usual on Boylston Street, but they’re trying.
There was an infectious energy on the street Wednesday as people walked around and visited businesses. Many left flowers and notes on the bomb sites and at the memorial in Copley Square.
Boylston Street reopened to the public at 3 a.m. Wednesday for the first time since the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15.
“It’s been very, very surreal for us. But it’s nice to be back, everyone is starting to feel a little bit back to normal,” said Amiko, who works on Boylston Street.
As doors reopened Wednesday, more heroes from the bombings at the Boston Marathon emerged.
“The first bomb blew up. I run upstairs to see if everyone was okay. Then, what, 30 seconds later the second bomb blew up. I see a lot of people running in the streets. I saw a lot of blood,” said David Moreno.
Moreno was working in the kitchen Max Brenner, a restaurant on Boylston Street. He didn’t hesitate to help after the bomb when off.
“I saw a guy come into the restaurant and I rushed to help him out. He had a lot of needles in his skin, he was bleeding a lot. I took my apron off, tried to make sure he was okay,” said Moreno.
At Sugar Heaven, a candy shop near the first bomb site, workers helped rush many out the backdoor, fearful of another explosion.
“We don’t know exactly who is coming back in. We talked to some of our staff. Some of them are here working right now and some of them we’re hoping will come back. I’m sure some will not come back,” said David Sapers, the owner of Sugar Heaven.
Flowers now sit on the sidewalk where the first bomb went off. It’s a way for many to heal while businesses pick up and reopen.
“For the businesses, I think most businesses on the street, they just want to get going. They just want to feel a sense of we’re back to work,” said Sapers.
There are still some businesses that are not open on Boylston Street. Many of them said they plan on being open on Thursday or Friday, some say it will be several weeks until they reopen.
