Overcoming obstacles with Best Buddies
BOSTON (WHDH) -- Overcoming obstacles: It's at the core of the "Best Buddies" program.
This is a program that 7News’ Adam Williams and Kayna Whitworth are happy to support in June’s Best Buddies Challenge.
They wanted to introduce you to someone who really shows what this program can do. He is a local fitness buff tackling challenges in life and the weight room.
Chris Harrington was born with Down Syndrome. 22 years later, with the help of the Best Buddies program, he might just be the busiest man in Massachusetts.
“I’m so proud that I’m working on my own. I’m learning a ton of new stuff. I’m being my own person here,” said Harrington.
Harrington is a perfect example of what Best Buddies can do. The program helps people with developmental disabilities grow and live full lives.
“He's gone from the friendship program, to the jobs program and is working two different jobs,” said Best Buddies Development Director Jon Brideau.
Tuesdays and Thursdays he is in charge of maintenance at Best Fitness in Chelmsford.
The fitness club is a perfect fit for Harrington who loves to workout himself.
He hopes to one day be a personal trainer - so he wasn't letting Kayna off the hook. He showed her his favorite exercises.
Chris' boss said he’s just like every other employee he has - except that he's an inspiration to everyone.
“The fact that he's so driven just inspires other people to actually work out a little harder when they're there,” said David Mansfield, the membership manager at Best Fitness.
Harrington admits he has some bad days, but he takes it out on the weight room.
“When I work out, I look straight into the mirror and I see myself and I say, ‘Keep on plugging. Keep on enjoying your life. Be passionate. Be friendly,’” said Harrington.
Harrington said that what really pushes him everyday to be better, is his parents.
“My parents are so proud of me, it’s like scary proud,” said Harrington.
Adam Williams and Kayna Whitworth are co-captains of Team Tom Brady this year and they still need help reaching their fundraising goal. Support them by donating or joining the team: Best Buddies Challenge.
