DOT releases video of teens who hitch ride on truck
BOSTON (WHDH) -- DOT surveillance cameras on Interstate 93 reveal more about the two teens that hitched a ride on the back of a tractor trailer as it moved down the highway.
The video shows two teens holding onto the back of an 18-wheeler from Chinatown, through the tunnel, and back out the other end to Dorchester.
“I was shocked and amazed. You don’t see it every day,” said one witness.
A 7News viewer, who didn’t want to be identified, pulled out his cell phone and captured this dangerous stunt on video.
“They were having a great time, looking around, looking at the cars and the side of the road. They didn’t have a care in the world I don’t think,” he said.
The two teens were riding the truck during rush hour traffic Tuesday morning. Motorists were finally able to get the truck driver’s attention but as soon as he slowed down, the boys made a run for it. They jumped off near the Greater Boston Food Bank.
“It was a little bit of pandemonium with cars stopping and trying to get the truck’s attention. He hadn’t even stopped yet and they jumped off and were running,” said the witness.
Incredibly, no one called the police. Troopers want to remind everyone that this is illegal, but more importantly, it’s a life or death situation.
“It’s extremely dangerous. It could lead to fatalities, not only to the two young men on the back of that truck, but to other motorists who could have to take evasive maneuvers if they fall off the truck,” said MSP Lt. Daniel Richard.
On Thursday, the Department of Transportation released video of the stunt.
MASS DOT released a statement saying they strongly discourage this kind of behavior and are urging drivers to call 911 if they see similar behavior.
