Mayor Menino's championship bets
BOSTON (WHDH) -- With every championship series, comes the tradition of politicians making bets. Throughout his long tenure at city hall, Boston Mayor Tom Menino has made plenty of them, but does one stand out?
“We’ve had 10 championships in my time as mayor and I just say that its fun. It’s part of the excitement of the World Series or the Super Bowl, and I’ve always enjoyed it,” Mayor Menino said.
Menino was hard pressed to think of a favorite, but what he got when the Red Sox beat the Cardinals in 2004 was memorable for all the wrong reasons.
"The mayor of St. Louis one year sent me fried ravioli. I’m Italian we never fried ravioli in my time."
Food bets are the mayor's favorite, like the crabs versus lobster wager he negotiated with Baltimore's mayor before a Pats-Ravens playoff game.
After Pittsburg’s mayor had to “Tebow” in a Bronco's jersey, Mayor Menino offered up the Paul Revere statue in the North End for any jersey wearing instead of him.
However, the major does have his limits.
"I'm not gonna wrestle a bear. I'm not gonna shave my head,” said Menino.
On the rare occasion that Boston teams don't win, Mayor Menino says he's happy to pay up.
