'Choose Life' license plate causes controversy

BOSTON -- A Pro-Life group is introducing a new Massachusetts license plate that already appears in 25 other states, but some residents would prefer to see the plates hit the road.

The new plate, which costs an extra $40 above the normal registration fee features a mother cradling a child and reads “Choose Life” on the bottom.

The group behind the plates, Choose Life Incorporated, said a portion of the money will go towards pregnancy crisis centers in Massachusetts.

“We’re not about changing abortion rights, we are about helping women, by helping them financially to make, what we feel is the right decision, and what they obviously feel is the right decision,” said President of Choose Life Incorporated, Merry Nordeen.

The group pre-sold 1,700 plates, and wants to sell thousands more.

“I would love it if we sold all 5,000. That would be an incredible testimony on the state of Massachusetts, that we could have 5,000 Choose Life plates going up and down the roads,” said Nordeen.

Pro-Choice groups in Massachusetts worry what type of medical information these centers will tell women.

“Typically the organizations involved in this are so called crisis pregnancy centers. They have been proven to provide false, misleading and medically inaccurate information to women. That is a deep concern to us,” said Executive Director of Naral Pro-Choice of Massachusetts, Andrea Miller.

People on the street gave mixed reactions to the new state plate.

“I wouldn’t mind putting that on my car because I like to choose life,” said another local.

“I probably wouldn’t make a political statement on my car,” said another resident.

The new plates will be available for purchase later on this month.
