BOSTON -- A stray cat that calls a Boston firehouse home unexpectedly gave birth on Sunday.

The cat usually just hangs around the Engine 53, Ladder 16 firehouse, but firefighter Jim Duffy noticed something different about her.

"I was just walking by and I saw it, it was licking its backside and I thought it was just something it got stuck to. And all of a sudden I saw something moving around and it had a nose and I just yelled out, ‘The cat’s having a baby! The cat's giving birth!" said Duffy.

More accustomed to human emergencies, the firefighters used Google to make sure they were ready. They got her a couple of cardboard boxes, towels, and some plastic gloves for themselves.

The births were quite a surprise for some of the guys.

"I didn't believe it. They came out and told me while I was eating in the kitchen. I didn't believe them at all 'cause I thought it was a male," said a firefighter.

All three kittens appear to be healthy.

The kittens will stay at the firehouse for six weeks, and then the firefighters will try to find them homes.
