BOSTON -- Fast-moving flooding on left a snapping turtle on the edge in Boston Thursday.

After flooding left it stranded on Storrow Drive, the snapping turtle took the plunge near the Mass Ave Bridge.

The turtle made a bad landing, but knew how to recover. It flipped over and wound up precariously close to traffic before bravely trying to make it to the other side.

People, and other wildlife, seemed to keep a close eye on the turtle's progress.

Some marveled at its size.

“It was such a gigantic turtle, I thought it was part of the foundation,” said one woman.

The turtle wasn't in too much of a rush getting across several lanes of traffic, but a few drivers were. Some managed to swerve around, but 2 SUVs straddled the turtle with their tires.

Then, a state trooper swooped in to try to make a rescue, but the turtle snapped at him.

The trooper called in the experts to prod the creature back home to the Charles River.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation said, judging on its size, the turtle has likely been around for a long time.
