LEXINGTON, Mass. -- One person was killed, and at least three others suffered serious injuries in a four-vehicle accident on Route 2 in Lexington on Thursday afternoon, according to State Police.

Around 2:30 p.m. a vehicle headed eastbound crossed over the median right into oncoming traffic that was headed westbound. That vehicle collided head-on with three cars at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle that crossed over the median was driven by a female who was killed and pronounced dead at the scene.

Another person who was hit in the accident has been described by state police as "in very bad shape." All but one of the people involved in the accident were transported to the hospital; one man was able to walk away.

Massachusetts State Police re-opened Route 2 westbound around 5:30 p.m.

Route 2 westbound was closed for about three hours while crews worked to clean the mess.

At one point, drivers near the accident scene were advised by state police to turn around and get off the highway.

The cause of the accident is now under investigation.
