Mass. state trooper on military leave arrested

BOSTON -- A Massachusetts State Trooper and Army veteran is in trouble with the law after allegedly driving drunk and pointing a gun at a Boston police officer on Saturday.
Several cars on a skinny Dorchester street were hit early Saturday morning. The damages to the vehicles ranged from small scratches to much worse.
An off-duty state trooper was allegedly behind the wheel driving down South Monroe Terrace early Saturday morning.
“From what I understand, the gentleman was quite drunk and quite belligerent and apparently half the police force in Dorchester was here last night,” said Patricia Bechold, whose car was damaged.
According to a state police spokesperson, the suspect is also accused of pulling a gun on Boston police officers who responded to the car crashes.
Authorities said that the suspect proceeded to go inside the home and fired a few rounds. No one was hurt.
Neighbors heard the commotion and ran outside.
“I came out looking,” said Lena Hunter. “I was half scared because all I could hear was ‘get on the ground, get on the ground.’ I seen police officers running with guns out.”
The trooper has been with state police for 18 years. He has spent the last five years in the active military.
“We are grateful beyond words that no one - not the Boston Police officers, not an innocent bystander, and not [the trooper] - was injured - or worse - by gunfire. We thank the Boston Police for the professionalism and restraint with which they handled this incident,” said Massachusetts State Police spokesperson, David Procopio.
He is facing numerous charges including drunk driving, illegal discharge of a firearm and assault with a dangerous weapon.
The trooper has an upcoming duty status hearing to find out his future status with the Department of State Police.
