Capuano backs off from controversial comment

BOSTON -- A Massachusetts Congressman backed off from a controversial comment he made.

Representative Mike Capuano was speaking before a rally at the State House on Monday. He was addressing pro-union workers who were protesting the governor of Wisconsin and his plan to limit union rights.

“Every once in awhile you need to get out on the streets and get a little bloody when necessary,” said Capuano.

Some people said that language was inflammatory. Capuano released a statement that said:

“I wish I had chosen different language toe express my passion…and I regret my choice of words.”

Capuano’s initial comment also raised eyebrows because he was among the lawmakers who called for calmer political rhetoric after his democratic colleague Gabrielle Giffords was shot in Arizona last month.
