DA: Cinelli's brother indicted after Dec. police shooting
WOBURN, Mass. -- Investigators say they'll charge the brother of the deceased shooter, in connection with armed robbery that happened before the death of a Woburn police officer.
There are new charges in the December botched robbery that left Woburn Police Officer Jack Maguire dead.
A grand jury is now indicting the brother of Domenic Cinelli. Police say Cinelli robbed the Kohl’s Department Store during a blizzard, and then shot and killed Officer Maguire.
Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone says the brothers texted each other before and during the robbery. Police say Domenic even texted that the police were close.
“Those text messages are a chilling snapshot of the preparation and planning of this…robbery between the Cinelli brothers,” said Leone.
Police say the only thing that kept Arthur Cinelli away from Kohl’s that night was a recent surgery.
The controversy surrounding Domenic Cinelli’s release from parole brought sweeping changes to the parole board. At that parole hearing, his brother Arthur testified saying that his life after prison was proof that Domenic should also be allowed out.
“That parole hearing in 2005, Arthur Cinelli talked about his having been a mortal parolee,” said Leone.
Officer Maguire’s widow and family were on hand for the DA’s announcement of these new charges, hoping it’s one more step to prevent anything like that from ever happening again.
“I just want to say thank you to the Woburn police and the district attorney and the state police and everybody that has worked so hard on this case and bringing it to, hopefully getting it to a closure, and to get the new parole board on board,” said Anne Decubellis, Officer Maguire’s cousin.
Two weeks after Officer Maguire was shot, Arthur Cinelli was arrested in New Hampshire on federal drug charges. He’s still being held on those charges.
