Whitey's ex-girlfriend surprised he was arrested

HULL, Mass. -- The mother of Whitey Bulger’s son spoke about his capture.
Lyndsey Cyr had a 14-year relationship with Whitey Bulger. She said she always knew he was alive, but never thought he'd be caught. Bulger told her he would never go back to jail.
Cyr met Whitey - or Jimmy as she called him in 1966. She said he was smooth, charming and she always felt protected. Whitey was 16 years older, but the two had a son named Douglas.
The three of them visited California often and took their son to see Whitey’s old jail cell in Alcatraz. Douglas died of Rye Syndrome at age 6.
Cyr said Whitey was never the same after their son died and they separated.
"I knew he never planned to go back to jail,” said Cyr. “He always said he would not as a matter of fact.”
When Cyr learned that the father of her first child was found, she immediately feared for his life.
Bulger was no stranger to trouble, and crime, she says even murder because it was part of the business.
Cyr said she has had no contact with Bulger over the past 16 years, but she still loves him. However, she said she would not have run off with him and gone into hiding like Catherine Greig.
