Bulger's ex-girlfriend talks about arrest

BOSTON -- James “Whitey” Bulger’s former girlfriend said she wasn’t surprised at what he said or how he looked after being on the run for 16 years.
Lindsay Cyr dated Bulger, or “Jimmy” as she knew him, for more than 10 years.
“Well he works out at least twice a day, he’s very athletic, he loves to walk,” Cyr said.
Cyr and Bulger had a son, Douglas, together. Douglas died at a young age and Cyr said she hasn’t seen or heard from Bulger since 1995, when he called to say goodbye.
“[He said] ‘I’m taking off for a while, but don’t worry about it, I have insurance, and it’s gold-plated,’” said Cyr.
Cyr still defends her ex; she said around her, he didn’t act like a man who is accused of having a hand in 19 murders.
Bulger is smart, Cyr said. She said she knew he hadn’t lost any of his wit when she heard Bulger told a federal judge he could afford an attorney if he got his money back.
“That’s vintage Jimmy, and he’s absolutely right,” Cyr said.
Cyr, who refuses to talk to the FBI, is surprised Bulger was caught, but is glad he is alive and well.
“I thought he was the last person they’d want alive, talking and feeling well,” Cyr said.
Cyr said she declined an offer to come to a South Boston courtroom Friday.
She said she now wonders if he wanted to get caught in order to see his family.
