Newton library worker arrested on child porn charges

NEWTON, Mass. -- A Newton library worker was arrested on child pornography charges on Tuesday.
Authorities searched the suspect’s home in Newton on Tuesday. Court papers say video files of child pornography were found on his lap top computer, as well as approximately 21 images.
The suspect, Peter Buchanan, worked part time at the Newton Public Library for about 10 years.
“We all go to the library and leave our kids alone and - if they’re older - let them wander around, look at books. It’s just a strange feeling to know that your child might not be safe,” said Carol Reichert, a concerned resident.
“You could put your children to read a book a corner and then you might go in another place in the library to look at another book. You’re still in the same room, but you just don’t know what’s happening,” said Scott Friedman, a concerned resident.
City officials say the suspect, 47, was an audio-visual classifier and had limited contact with the public.
In court, prosecutors said that the pornographic material belonged to the suspect.
“Mr. Buchanan further admitted to having downloaded child pornography over the last three to five years,” said a prosecutor.
The case comes on the heels of the arrest of a long-time Newton second grade teacher also facing child pornography chargers.
“It is outrageous,” said Newton Mayor Setti Warren.
Mayor Warren said both men had passed background checks, but more needs to be done.
“What we’re going to do here in the city along with the Newton public schools, is take a very aggressive look at our hiring procedures,” Mayor Warren said.
The suspect is being held on $5,000 cash bail.
