Mayor Menino cracks down on bad landlords
DORCHESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- The city of Boston has decided to send a strong message to bad landlords. The mayor has said they have let their properties become an eye sore. Now he has come up with a solution to these problem properties.
Shaming signs have been posted outside of problem properties. The city is hoping to embarrass the landlords into taking care of their property.
"It’s to make sure that people know who are the bad landlords and this way is to really designate the billboards there… we want people to know that," said Mayor Menino.
One large sign has already been set up in front of a Dorchester home. Many people in the area had no idea what was happening just down the block.
"That’s crazy because I only live a few houses down and I have a child and I wouldn’t want that to happen in my building so that’s bad," said area resident Marissa Harris.
Mayor Menino has said the bad landlords are sucking money out of their properties, making the homes a problem for the tenants and for the neighborhood.
"Long term delayed maintenance, broken sashes, porches that are not safe... that’s not the tenants who do that it’s the landlord doing the upkeep," said Mayor Menino.
The city doesn’t plan to just stop the campaign with the one house.
"We’re going to be vigorous on these we are going to make sure that we get all these properties and try to bring these people to housing court... every means legally we are going to take against these individuals," said Menino.
Some neighbors say the sign has sent an important message to landlords and renters.
" No, I’d move immediately," said new area resident, Jason Riley, when asked if he’d want to live in a home with a sign outside.
