Truck hauling gravel overturns, stalls traffic

BOSTON (WHDH) -- A tractor trailer hauling gravel overturned on the lower deck of I-93 in Boston, closing the road and backing up traffic for miles.

Traffic had started flowing on the lower deck by 9 a.m. Thursday, but many drivers had been stuck in traffic for as much as three hours by that point.

The 18-wheel tractor trailer tipped over during the height of rush hour. All lanes of I-93 South were closed immediately after, with traffic being diverted to Exit 26 in Somerville.

Cleanup efforts took several hours after the accident, with crews scooping spilled dirt and gravel from the roadway and loading it back into the righted tractor trailer.

The driver of the truck was taken to a Boston hospital with minor injuries.
