BRIGHTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police say a man tried to steal a new car from an Allston dealership by driving it right out of the showroom on Wednesday. The suspect ended up crashing it as he attempted to flee.
Police say 39-year-old Ender Durgut got into a black Venza inside the Herb Chambers showroom, and proceeded to crash into another car.
“He apparently got in the car, started it up, put the pedal to the floor, smashed into another car, pushed the car into a closet,” said Herb Chambers, dealership owner.
The suspect hit a silver Prius, desks, chairs, and cabinets. Luckily, no one was injured.
“The employees at the dealership followed him down the street because he jumped out of the car and kind of ran. Police apprehended him up on Commonwealth Avenue by my Honda dealership,” Chambers said.
The suspect is facing several charges including assault with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct. He was evaluated by a physician who said it court that he suffers from mental illness and shows signs of psychotic behavior.
“The most important thing is that nobody got hurt. We can always fix the cars,” said Chambers.
It wasn't the first time Durgut has crashed a car. In March, prosecutors say he led police on a chase through three towns. They also say the car he tried to drive off with on Wednesday was the same type of car he crashed back in March.
Durgut has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and is due back in court later this month.
