BROOKLINE, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Star Market on Beacon Street in Brookline was robbed and the suspect carjacked a customer on Wednesday evening.
Police say the suspect took a Baysate taxi to the Star Market. They say he entered the store, handed a note to a person at the courtesy counter, demanded cash, and then took off with the till. But when the suspect tried to get back into his awaiting cab, police say the driver noticed something was wrong and wouldn't let him in the cab. He fled in a woman’s silver Lexus SUV.
The vehicle was later found at the Brookline Hills MBTA stop. Police believe the suspect got on a train going outbound towards Riverside.
An emptied-out cash register was left outside of the grocery store.
"There was cash and it was like somebody just took the whole bottom of the cash register out," said Joe Raft, a witness.
The suspect is described as a white male in his 40s or 50s, heavyset, with scruffy facial hair.
Police are hoping circulating surveillance photos of the suspect will lead to his arrest.
