BOSTON (WHDH) -- An imprisoned former FBI agent who was convicted of helping Whitey Bulger avoid capture is speaking out for the first time, saying that the former Boston mob boss could help free him.

John Connolly is serving decades behind bars for helping whitey Bulger escape and also commit crime. Now the disgraced FBI agent is speaking out from prison for the first time since Bulger's arrest one year ago.

Connolly is accusing the justice department of keeping the full truth of the government's role in Bulger's crimes from coming out.

Connolly was convicted of warning Bulger he was about to be arrested and also giving him information that led to a murder in Miami.

Bulger was arrested last summer in California after 16 years on the run.

In an interview with "The Daily Beast" Connolly said the government is trying to cover up parts of the Bulger case.

Bulger was a top FBI informant at the time he allegedly carried out many of the murders with which he is now charged.

In the interview Connolly says:

"My lawyers have information that since Bulger was brought in, he spoke to FBI agents and told them I had nothing to do with tipping him off and he told them - I had nothing to do with this murder in Florida, not one damn thing."

Connolly hopes Bulger's arrest will lead to his conviction being overturned.
