NEW YORK (WHDH) -- An innocent victim of circumstance?
That’s how the twin sister of James Whitey Bulger’s girlfriend described her sister’s fate.
Last week, Catherine Greig was sentenced to eight years in prison for harboring a fugitive.
On Friday, Greig’s twin sister, Margaret McCusker spoke with NBC’s Matt Lauer.
McCusker stands by her sister and described the day she dropped her off with one of Whitey’s guys.
"She said 'Margaret, I won't be any longer than three months. It’s just a little trip, that's it. I’ll be back',” McCusker said. “It just dawned on me that point that she may never be back."
McCusker said it didn’t bother her that her sister spent 16 years on the run with the reputed boss.
McCusker said she doesn’t believe that Bulger was allegedly involved with 19 murders. She added that she doesn’t believe Greig knew anything about it.
Greig’s sister admitted that a year after her sister and Bulger went on the run the two spoke on the phone several times, but then for 15 years there was no contact.
