Software glitch complicates Monday commute

BOSTON (WHDH) -- The MBTA was dealing with a few technical hiccups on the first weekday of fare increases Monday.

The MBTA expected a smoother commute Tuesday morning, but Monday the agency had some technical trouble. Up to 40,000 corporate commuter rail passes were subject to a software glitch.

It was caused by new software that was installed on the machines to register the new fares.

MBTA employees had to manually check-in commuter rail passengers

"It didn't affect the customers' commuter rail ride, because they're still flashing the pass, but it did affect some customers who were using the bus or subways," MassDOT Secretary Richard Davey said.

A MBTA spokesperson says 25,000 card-holders regularly transfer between the commuter rail and subway and could have been affected.

They also say some corporate administrators failed to pay sufficient funds toward their employees' passes to account for the rate hikes.
