Transformer fire knocks out power in Brookline

BROOKLINE, Mass. (WHDH) -- Manhole fire in Brookline created a dangerous situation, leaving people without power on one of the hottest nights of the summer.

“The lights flickered and everything went black.”

For residents in this Brookline neighborhood, the misery started around 9:00 Tuesday night.

NStar said a transformer fire underground knocked out power to several buildings in the vicinity of St. Paul and Egmont streets. People said they saw smoke coming from manholes in the area. At least 90 people were without power on what was probably the hottest night of the year. Residents who suffered through the sweltering night said it wasn't pretty.

“I did not have the best night,” said Jessica Schaffel, who had no power throughout the night.

“It was pretty hot,” said Andrew Whiteman, who also was without power overnight.

Utility crews worked all night long and eventually restored power to all the residents shortly after daybreak. A generator was put in place to provide electricity while crews continued to work.

While it was a miserable night for most of those that lost power there were no complaints from this man who is here visiting from down South.

“I come from Texas,” said Mukul Ganguli, “so it wasn’t that bad.”

There were also power outages in Mission Hill, Brighton, and South Boston Tuesday night.
