Over-height truck hits 2 signs inside O'Neill tunnel

BOSTON (WHDH) -- Two electronic signs were hanging from the ceiling of the Tip O’Neill tunnel during Tuesday’s commute.

There was nothing structurally wrong with the tunnel. State Police said an over-height tractor-trailer truck hit two lane-use signals, which is used to control traffic flow in the tunnel, just before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The first signal was hit near the entrance to the tunnel. The second was hit deep inside the tunnel near exit six.

“It just looked like a box fixture…about 15 feet from the ceiling,” said Jason Porter.

Ported snapped a photo of the dangling signs and tweeted it out.

“Just to let people know what was going out. There was a danger, if they were commuting in maybe there’d be traffic, or who knows,” Porter said.

The middle lane of the tunnel was shut down, which impacted traffic in the tunnel. Traffic was significantly backed up going into the tunnel after lanes were closed to make repairs. All lanes were reopened by 11 a.m.

“It is always something, I mean, they’re supposed to read the signs for the heights, so they should know,” said Michelle Lebon.

“I really hate that tunnel. It’s a disaster zone, it really is,” said Rayla Campbell. “Every time you go through there, you have to worry, what’s going to fall, is there going to be a flood. We spent all this money and what has it done? Nothing.”

Investigators are now looking at surveillance video so they can find the truck driver and issue a citation.
