CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH)-- For the second time in less than a week a woman told police she was raped on Harvard University’s campus.
The latest attack happened Tuesday night after 11 p.m. behind Memorial Hall. This victim, like last week’s, was not a Harvard student, but was walking on campus when she was attacked.
For the second Friday in a row, students received an email from campus police warning them to be careful late at night.
“When we’re in lab late and things like that we worry about coming back on time and coming back safe, but generally we figure that Harvard’s campus is quite safe,” said Vini Mani, a Harvard student.
The previous attack happened last Friday in the early morning near the Johnston Gate. Immediately following that incident, Campus police, both uniformed and plain clothed, stepped up patrols.
Students have noticed.
“I did see cops going down Mass. Ave. and around the general area, so they -- I see a presence,” said Christopher Garris.
Students, some already on alert, said after the second incident they’ll make a conscious effort to be more aware of their surroundings, especially after dark.
“People should smart enough these days to know, to take precaution, especially when you’re walking at night. Don’t walk alone,” said Julie Frish, a Harvard student.
Officers said it appears the two cases have two different suspects. The most recent victim described her attacker as a thin white man about 5 feet 6 inches tall with spiked dark hair, in his mid-20s. Last week’s victim described her attacker as being a "very tanned" man in his mid-20s with dark hair and a medium build.
Fall classes begin Sept. 4.
