Dorchester man in custody after assaulting officer

DORCHESTER, Mass. (WHDH) -- Career criminal, Calvin Horne, is back in custody after attacking and injuring an officer in Dorchester.

Police said Horne was released from prison three weeks ago and will likely be heading back behind bars.

What began as a traffic violation on Millet Street, escalated into a melee when Horne was being cuffed.

“It was a long struggle to place him in handcuffs resulting in all three parties falling towards the ground. While on the ground, there was a long struggle in which Mr. Horne struck both the sergeant and the officer numerous times,” said asst. district attorney, Mike Distefano.

Horne was allegedly armed to the teeth with firearms, ammunition and cocaine. Prosecutors said it took four officers to finally subdue him.

"Mr. Horne allegedly grabbed Sgt Brooks’ firearm. Sgt. Brooks felt his hand on the firearm and Sgt. Brooks attempted to pin Mr. Horne’s arm so that he could not actually take the firearm out of the holster,” said Distefano.

Sources said the sergeant, who needed stitches and suffered an injured eardrum, has a history from his days on the gang unit with the suspect.

The suspect’s attorney said this incident is a blur.

“Mace is sprayed. One of the officers is blind from the mace that's sprayed. A struggle then ensues with who knows who's causing what kinds of injuries to the people who are involved,” said defense attorney, John Hightower.

The judge ordered Horne be held without bail, then wished him luck; something he'll probably need after his second arrest for assaulting police and facing the new law that says, “3 strikes, you’re out.”
