RI man charged in fatal accident in Attleboro

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Rhode Island man accused of driving drunk when he caused a head-on crash that killed a North Attleboro woman last Thursday has been charged.

Attleboro police say 32-year-old Jason Kwolek of Pawtucket, R.I., appeared in court Tuesday. He was charged with manslaughter in addition to drunken driving and motor vehicle homicide after allegedly causing the crash that killed 24-year-old Kaisha Lynn Guerrini.

Prosecutors said Kwolek was driving drunk.

“An odor of alcohol was observed about him by ambulance personnel who came into contact with him. He was spoken to by police, did make some admissions to the police, the fact that he had been drinking,” said Cindy Brackett, prosecutor.

Kaisha Guerrini leaves behind a 3-year-old son and was an active member of the Army National Guard. She was attending Bristol Community College where she was on the Dean’s List.

Kaisha Guerrini’s family and friends came to court to watch the arraignment.

“She was a good kid, really. She was coming from school last night and it’s just a sad thing,” said Edward Guerrini, victim’s grandfather.

Kwolek’s attorney says his client doesn’t have a criminal record, and feels terrible about what happened.

“He’s obviously very despondent, he’s very upset, and he’s a very nice man. Comes from a wonderful family,”said Kevin Reddington, defense attorney.  

After the arraignment, Edward Guerrini said, “It’s a life lost that really was senseless. She had a lot going for her. Now…what are they going to tell the boy?”

Kwolek left the courthouse after he posted $15,000 cash bail Thursday afternoon.

Family and friends of Kaisha Guerrini will be gathering on Friday for her funeral.
