WINTHROP, Mass. (WHDH) -- Heavy winds are threatening to knock down branches and power lines, possibly causing widespread power outages across the Northeast.

"The Boston area should have a period of 18 hours of winds gusting from anywhere from 60 to 80 miles an hour. The constant beating of power lines and tree limbs has its consequence,” said Chief Paul Flanagan, Winthrop Fire Department.

Sandy has already proven that in the Caribbean, but with her sights set on the eastern seaboard, sand bags have already been strategically placed in Somerville.

"Our biggest concerns is flooding and potential for downed power lines,” said Joe Curtatone, mayor of Somerville.

Power companies already have hundreds of crews on standby and even more heading this way. But they are telling customers they will keep working until all power that goes out will be restored.

“No one in the path of this storm is going to release their own crews until they know the system is safe,” said an electric company spokesperson.

Earlier in the day people were getting out with their pets before Sandy arrives.

“This is the last time they'll come out until the storm is over. We have done this before with a nor’easter. We just stay in the house until it’s over,” said Patricia Malizia.

Residents are being asked to stay indoors along with their animals and their kids.

“You can have a public safety hazard with an electrical wire that’s charged. It could be leaning on a chain-like fence. You have a kid walk by, wants to see what’s going on leans on the fence and there's a possibility of electrocution,” said Lt. Frank Scarpa.

Winthrop Shore Drive will be closed as of 8 a.m. Monday and Revere is going to close their floodgates.
