Bulger's girlfriend appeals prison sentence

BOSTON (WHDH) -- Catherine Greig, former girlfriend of reputed mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, is appealing her prison sentence.

Greig said she shouldn’t have been sentenced to eight years in prison and her punishment is unfair, according to court documents, because of the bitter hatred put on her by the families of Bulger’s alleged victims.

Greig’s lawyer said the statements at the sentencing were made by people who were not victims of Greig and their words may have influenced the court’s decision.

“It came from my heart. I asked her to look at me when I spoke to her and I probably would have gave her a little respect. She disrespected every one of us. She wants to be that tough girl -- I called her what she deserved to be called,” said Steve Davis, brother of alleged Bulger victim.

Bulger’s former girlfriend said she shouldn’t be held responsible for an arsenal the FBI found in the walls of her and Bugler’s California apartment because she knew nothing about it.

“She knew. I mean, how are you going to hide -- he had an arsenal of guns, how are you going to hide them from anybody?” said Davis.

Greig was sentenced to eight years in prison last June for harboring Bulger for 16 years and committing identity fraud to keep both of them ahead of the international manhunt. She is currently at a minimum security prison in Minnesota.

Bulger, 83, is set to go to trial for his alleged role in 19 murders next June.
