Steven Murphy re-elected president of city council

BOSTON (WHDH) -- The Boston City Council re-elected councilor Stephen Murphy as President for the New Year.

As the president, Murphy is first in line if Mayor Tom Menino steps down before the end of his term.

Menino has faced a number of health issues recently.

Murphy said he thinks the mayor will stay put, and maybe even run for re-election.

“I believe he will but he has to make that decision. He’s someone who I think has been a great mayor and I look forward to working with him this year.

But knowing him and seeing him and being with him, he’s as strong as can be right now and we're happy to have him back,” said Stephen Murphy, President of the Boston City Council.

Murphy has been on the Boston City Council for 17-years.
