BOSTON -- A police imposter robbed a couple outside of a Red Line "T" stop Friday, according to the MBTA.

The couple was waiting for a train at the Alewife station when a woman pretending to be a cop approached and asked for cigarettes, police said.

According to police, the man and woman then followed the alleged impersonator to the garage, where smoking is allowed.

The suspect then stole money, and took the cigarettes, police said.

The couple told transit police the woman appeared to be a police officer, but didn’t show an ID when asked.

Some people waiting at the Alewife station Friday afternoon said a police uniform usually means a trustworthy person.

“Police officers are authority figures and people trust them and don’t expect them to trick them out of their money and cigarettes,” one woman said.

No gun or weapon was ever pulled, and no one was physically injured.
