"Make Way for Ducklings" statuettes vandalized

BOSTON -- A famous Boston landmark was vandalized Monday morning.
Police say whoever defaced the Public Garden’s "Make Way for Ducklings" statuettes could face fines or even jail time.
Some were tagged with the letters “BP,” others painted with the words “better prey.”
“It’s a nice area for the kids, so it’s a shame to see people hurt that in any way,” said local resident Richard Dachroeden.
"I think of it just as a milestone for the kids to get to come and sit on the ducks one of the exciting things that they get to do...For someone to destroy something for children, that's an awful thing," said Boston resident Sarah Flick.
The Public Garden Work Crew discovered the vandalism early Monday morning.
Nancy Schön sculpted the ducklings to commemorate Robert McCloskey’s children’s book by the same name.
The graffiti has since been cleaned up. Some of the ducks have been taken and returned in the past, but never vandalized.
There is some speculation that whoever committed the crime may have been making a statement about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
