Crash in Chatham kills 1, injures 4
CHATHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- A deadly crash in Chatham left one person dead and four others injured, including two children.
“The Range Rover that I guess was the car that was pursued had leapt off the road and landed on the cars across the street that were parked,” said Julie Dykens who heard the crash.
The crash happened just before 6:30 Saturday night on Route 28. It began as a police chase but ended when the suspect’s vehicle collided with an SUV near the Kream N’ Kone in Chatham. It involved seven vehicles. A pedestrian, a 62-year-old man from Orleans was struck and killed.
“Very busy and they were mobbed over there at the restaurant. Very sad and very tragic that it had to happen like that,” said Dykens.
“It’s like, you’ve got to watch your back every step of the way. I mean, just with everyday life now,” said Paul Casano who was visiting the Cape.
The police pursuit began in Harwich where the authorities received calls the person behind the wheel in the Range Rover was driving erratically. He allegedly refused to stop for officers.
“You have to live in that fear that the person behind the wheel is out to get away and he doesn’t care what’s going on,” said Casano.
They injured were taken to hospitals in Boston. The driver will be arraigned Monday in Orleans district court. Police said he faces a charge of failing to stop for officers, but more charges could be added.
