CENTERVILLE, Mass. -- Authorities took two children from a filthy home filled with dozens of flea-ridden cats.

Over 40 kittens were rescued from terrible conditions in the Cape Cod home.

According to volunteers from the New England Society for Abandoned Animals, trash and feces was everywhere.

“It’s on everything. On every piece of clothing, on the floor, on the couch, on the kitchen cabinets,” said Deborah Doe from the New England Society for Abandoned Animals.

Animal control officers said they were called in when the Department of Children and Families removed the two kids on Monday and discovered the conditions.

The occupant said the cats were his girlfriend's.

“There are 11 cats and 27 kittens, so, the kittens were really the problem as far as the feces. It just got out of control,” said the occupant.

According to him, he hopes people will adopt the cats who now all need homes.

Volunteers created an assembly line to flea wash, deworm, vaccinate and hydrate the kittens, which are now all bouncing back to health.

“I can’t believe that everybody was alive actually. That’s what I can’t believe, that everybody survived,” said a volunteer.

It costs about $100 to give these kittens and cats the care they need.

The shelter is asking for any vets in the area that may have availability to help get all of the spayed and neutered so they can be ready for adoption.
