Some stay, some leave Nantucket

NANTUCKET, Mass. -- As night settled in on Nantucket, the folklore of storms past became reality.

"I was here 19 years ago during Hurricane Bob, and stuck here for the weekend. It was so much fun, but it was a little eerie” said Kim Freund, who is leaving for higher ground.

Except for the storm flags blowing in the wind there aren't too many eerie signs of trouble on the horizon, but there's a definite buzz on the island.

"Everyone's talking about it though. It's always that quiet before the storm where it's always super nice,” said Freund.

Yet it's frightened enough people that waiting to get off island was long, tiresome and necessary.

“I work out here and I’ve lived here 15 years, but I have things on the other side as well so it's a juggling act for this one,” said Bill Martling, a boat owner.

This one named Earl, and it could be the big one, and remembering what it’s like was painful for some.

"A lot of trees down, a lot of branches down, a lot of restaurants closed, a lot of the stores closed. If you’re here you need to have enough provisions at home to kind of wait it out…a 24 hour period could seem like a week,” said one woman.

A week of inconvenience could easily become reality if Earl changes his track or picks up speed.
