FALMOUTH, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police say an elementary school student brought an air-soft gun to school on Wednesday.

The 6-year-old girl brought to school an air-soft hand gun; a toy that shoots plastic BB’s.

Police say on Wednesday, the kindergartener at East Falmouth Elementary School brought the air-soft gun on the school bus inside her backpack. The discovery was made on the afternoon bus.

“The gun was never taken out of the backpack by the student. There was no threats. Another student saw it in the backpack and just alerted the bus driver. It was never taken out,” said Lt. Jeffrey Smith, Falmouth Police Department.

The school bus driver took the gun and turned it over to authorities. Police say even they could have mistaken it for a real gun.

“It could be seen as harmful,” Lt. Smith said.

Police say they spoke to the gun-toting girl's parents. They say the family has two or three air guns in their home.

Other parents at school say they're stunned, but relieved no one was hurt.

“It’s an awful thing. Parents need to put things away that shouldn’t be around kids at all,” said Charity Dehnick, a parent.

The State Department of Children and Families is investigating.
