Two great whites detected off Cape Cod coast

CHATHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- Although there haven’t been any sightings this year, there are signs that great white sharks that were tagged last year have returned to Chatham.

The tourists have driven their way north and so have some great white sharks.

“We know they’re here. We haven’t physically seen a shark yet. We have seen seals bitten,” said John Chisholm, Dep. Marine Fisheries.

Two of the seven sharks tagged last year are back for the summer.

“When the water is right and to their liking, they remember where they had a good meal and they come back,” said Chisholm.

And Chatham -- along with beautiful stretches of white sandy beaches -- is home to thousands of seals.

“My wife and I were about a mile down the beach here yesterday and there had to be a hundred seals there,” said Dick Slocumb.

A buoy -- the Department of Marine Fishery says -- has a receiver that first picked up the sharks return on June 8. And it's now caught the interest of visitors.

Last September a red buoy -- a couple hundred yards from shore -- picked up that a great white was near.

And while the proximately of carnivorous creatures have kept some from heading into water, many couldn’t resist the golden opportunity to start summer enjoying the sun.

Marine officials say they will continue to tag and track the great whites.
