No charges for boyfriend in Yale grad's death

ORLEANS, Mass. (WHDH) -- A New York man was cleared of charges in a Cape Cod rollover crash that took his girlfriend’s life.

Marina Keegan, 22, died just days before she graduated from Yale. Her boyfriend told police that he fell asleep behind the wheel.

“I’m very happy for that young man because he’s a fine, fine person,” said Philip Tracy Jr., Gocksch’s attorney.

The short proceeding cleared Michael Gocksch, 22, from any criminal charges in Keegan’s death.

Marina Keegan’s parents have supported Gocksch from the start and they were by his side in court on Thursday. His attorney said Kevin and Tracy Keegan sent letters and made phone calls to state police asking them to not pursue charges.

“The thing about it, there was no speeding, no recklessness involved, no negligence,” said Tracy.

Marina Keegan was a writer and was about to move to Brooklyn to work for the New Yorker. After her death, her writings went viral. Her family said they’ve received support from around the world.

In court, they were the ones providing the support to Gocksch who has to live with his mistake the rest of his life.

“He certainly wishes it was him and not her who suffered the fatality,” said Tracy.

There were no drugs or alcohol in Gocksch’s system. They were both wearing their seat belts.
