Video shows Wayland murder victim's last days
WOBURN, Mass. (WHDH) -- Some dramatic moments unfolded Tuesday in the trial of the Wayland man accused of killing his high school sweetheart.
Jurors watched surveillance video that showed the victim on the day she was murdered.
The mother of the victim, Lauren Astley, could not contain her anguish as the prosecution showed video of Astley on the day she was killed.
The video shows the18-year-old at the Natick Mall where she worked.
The prosecution said the video also shows the accused killer, 20-year-old Nathanial Fujita, at the mall. Fujita is charged with murdering Astley in July 2011, just weeks after they had graduated from Wayland High School.
Police said Fujita murdered Astley at his home and then dumped her body in a marshy area in Wayland.
The incident allegedly happened months after the two stopped dating.
The defense said Fujita was psychotic and didn’t know what he was doing at the time.
On Tuesday, the testimony also included that of a Wayland police officer who interviewed Fujita the day after she was killed, though she was still considered a missing person. The officer described Fujita as calm and stable.
