WOBURN, Mass. (WHDH) -- A Wayland police sergeant testified Thursday in the trial of a young Wayland man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend.

Sgt. Jamie Berger testified about what he found at the crime scene and about Nathaniel Fujita's arrest.

Prosecutors say Fujita murdered Lauren Astley in 2011 because he was depressed about their breakup. He then allegedly dumped her body in a marsh.

"There was a large wound to her neck. He was in the bed, sleeping. We had turned the light on. As soon as we turned the light on, he arose from his sleep. I explained to him he was under arrest for murder, he stood up, I asked him to put him his hands behind his back, he did so,” said Sgt. Berger, Wayland Police Department in court.

If convicted, Fujita faces life in prison.
