Boy struck by car while riding his bike in Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. -- A 12-year-old boy was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Lowell on Monday.
Police said the boy was riding his bike on Willard Street at around 2 p.m. when he was hit by a red sedan. The boy was allegedly sent flying into the air.
Witnesses said the crash sounded like two cars colliding. Several neighbors heard that loud noise and ran to the scene. They said the boy was on the ground writhing in pain, and suffering from apparent head injuries.
The boy was airlifted from the scene to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with very serious head and neck injuries, according to police.
“They had a neck brace on, but what I heard they wanted to just take precaution to take her to Boston,” said Scott Harrison, a witness. “There was definitely no helmet.”
Police confirmed the young boy was not wearing a helmet.
Officials are investigating the cause of the accident.
