NORWOOD, Mass. -- Forget about waiting to get to the hospital, one Norfolk baby couldn’t even wait for dad to get home.

Newborn Kailey Gilmore’s mom is a little camera shy, but that’s not stopping dad from telling the world how heroic his wife is.

“My wife, that’s unbelievable what she did,” he said.

What she did was give birth to Kailey all by herself inside her home. She didn’t even have time to call for help.

“I was going no more than 15 minutes,” Bob Gilmore said. “So in the 15 minutes I was gone, everything happened.”

Kailey was overdue. The couple had checked in with the doctor, who told them to expect the big arrival in one or two days, so they went home.

“When we left the hospital, the doctor said ‘babies don’t just fall out’,” Gilmore said.

So the couple settled in to wait. Dad figured he’d fill the car’s gas tank up just to be safe. When he got back home, his wife was at the door.

“And she’s screaming ‘Bobby, the baby!’” Gilmore said. “So I run in thinking she’s in labor. And no, she had the baby in her arms. She was calm as could be. I was a mess. I was a disaster.”

A quick call to 911 and an ambulance to the nearest hospital, and it turns out mom did a great job. Kailey is healthy and perfect, but with a story her parents can’t wait to tell her.

“I can’t even begin to explain how amazing that is,” Gilmore said.

In a way, this couldn’t have happened to two more different people. Mom works as a nurse, and dad works for a hazardous cleanup company, so he was able to call a crew in to get the house clean in time for them to arrive home from the hospital.
