Car crashes into emergency room in Natick

NATICK, Mass. -- A vehicle has crash into Metro West Medical Center's Natick campus but no injuries were reported.

A man in his 60s trying to leave the parking lot fired up his Mustang and crashed right through the side of the building.

“The patient had backed into the parking spot and had accelerated out of the parking spot and went right through the wall…primarily just some sheetrock and plywood…nothing structural,” said Chief James Sheridan of the Natick Fire Department.

The man was in a handicapped spot and for some reason he hit the gas, went across the roadway and struck the radiology department at Leonard Morse Hospital - the Natick campus of the Metro West Medical Center.

“No one was hurt. Nobody was hurt in the hospital, nor was the driver of the automobile. He’s still in our emergency room being evaluated, but we know he’s not seriously hurt in any way,” said Beth Donnelly, hospital spokesperson.

The man had been trapped in his Mustang, but first responders managed to pull debris and set him free. The car was eventually pulled out on a flatbed.

Ambulances responding to the emergency room were diverted so they wouldn’t interfere with emergency crews working on the accident.

The hospital’s camera, used to photograph patients who’ve ingested a solution to look for things like blockages, in the arteries was destroyed.

Although it is the nuclear medicine component to the hospital, it didn’t disturb any of the products…absolutely no release of nuclear material,” said Sheridan.

Natick police are investigating. They say at this point the driver does not face any charges.
