Police: Young girl struck, killed by mom's SUV
LITTLETON, Mass. -- A 10-year-old was struck by her mom's SUV in the driveway of the family's home in Littleton, according to Littleton police.
“It’s just horrible. It’s unbelievable that in this small little community this happens…I feel bad,” said Bob Quinn, a neighbor to the family.
Neighbors are stunned by the death of a 10-year-old girl. The girl’s mother accidentally ran her over when she pulled into the family’s driveway on Matawanakee Trail, police said.
“The mom was swinging into the driveway and the driveway slopes down," said Deputy Chief Matthew King of the Littleton Police Department. "The little girl was playing in the driveway laying down and the mom just never saw her or would be able to see that she was in the driveway."
The 10-year-old was airlifted to the hospital where she died.
The girl was lying down on the driveway, playing with her pet bird. Neighbors told police they’d often seen her doing that. The mother’s view was probably blocked by some parked pick-up trucks, police said.
“It was a small child, and laying down you wouldn’t see her at all,” King said. “It’s just a horrible accident.”
Neighbors called their community close-knit. All the children know each other and often play together, swimming at the lake. This loss hugely affect the community.
“My condolences go out to everybody involved. It’s really horrible,” Quinn said. “It’s hard not to just feel like crying even though I don’t really know them much at all, but this is so close. It’s hard.”
The 10-year-old girl went to school in Tyngsboro at Notre Dame Academy. No charges have been made.
