WOBURN, Mass. -- A former Newton elementary school teacher, already accused of possessing child pornography, was in court on Wednesday facing new charges of sexual assault.
David Ettlinger, 34, appeared in Woburn Superior Court on new charges that he sexually assaulted a young girl he was babysitting for.
Ettlinger, who was a second grade teacher at the Underwood School in Newton, was arrested in January on possession of child pornography charges, and possession of a lewd video of a young girl who was a daughter of his friend.
Parents are outraged.
“It’s sick. I feel betrayed. It’s just bad for everybody,” said Susanna Barboza, a concerned parent.
The latest allegations follow the discovery of a video prosecutors say show the suspect sexually assaulting the victim. According to the Assistant District Attorney, Ettlinger had been hired by the victim’s parents to care for her.
“Obviously it’s disappointing to hear about these new allegations, however, my client has the full support of his family,” said Tannis Yannetti, defense attorney.
Newton Schools Superintendent David Fleishman says they are doing everything possible to help parents and students cope with the shocking allegations.
“We have no idea [if there are more victims]. Students have not come forward to us, or families. So we just hope that obviously they’re going to go to the police department or D.A.’s office, an ongoing investigation,” said Fleishman.
The superintendent said Ettlinger resigned last week only hours before he learned he was about to be fired.
Ettlinger is being held on $50,000 cash bail.
