NEWTON, Mass. (WHDH) -- Police say a well-dressed man stole thousands of dollars in jewelry from a Newton store in broad daylight on Friday.
The suspect walked into the Pageo Jewelry Store around 11 a.m.
“He was pretty bold, and you would never have anticipated anything from someone that would look like this,” said Pam Swartz, store owner.
Surveillance cameras captured a man --police say in his 50’s -- stealing tens of thousands of dollars in jewelry.
“He came in, said he was meeting his wife, was looking for a ring for her in the $20,000 price range,” Swartz said. “When one of the sales girls went to get him some prices, he turned to another case that was inadvertently left open and started filling his pockets with some necklaces and earrings.”
With his pockets full of very expensive jewelry, the suspect simply walked out of the store.
“He didn’t even rush out. He kind of lingered a little while and left,” Swartz said.
Newton Police, who have analyzed the surveillance video, say the suspect may be a professional.
“I’m sure it’s not the first time this individual has done that. Nobody for the first time seems to be that smooth,” said Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker, Newton Police Department.
There have been no arrested so far, police say.
