Cambridge considering ban on large sugary drinks

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WHDH) -- The mayor of Cambridge has proposed a ban on larger sizes of sugary drinks.

It has been a hot topic ever since New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to ban the sugary drinks.

Monday night, the city of Cambridge agreed to study the possibility of banning large sugary drinks at restaurants in Cambridge.

Customers at Cambridge restaurants could soon have fewer options to quench their thirst.

“When people are served these gigantic portions of soda in bottomless cups, sometimes it’s just more than people are able to resist,” said Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis.

“The government is going too far with those things. It’s the people’s choice to do what they want to do,” one man said.

Sound familiar? They got the idea from New York City where Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to ban restaurants, movie theatres, food carts and even sports arenas from selling sodas and other sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces -- all to fight obesity.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea. It limits business and it limits people’s choices,” a woman said.

But others say something has to be done to slow down the obesity epidemic.

“I think it’s sad that it’s gotten to that point that people are letting themselves go the point that the government needs to intervene,” a man said.

The health committee will study every aspect of the possible ban and report back to the city council who will make the final decision.
